Guidance on Access for Children Under 8’s to Single-Sex Changing Rooms

Last Updated: 10 Aug 2026

Children under the age of 8 must be supervised by a responsible person aged 16+ into the single sex changing room that corresponds with the person’s gender. Children aged 8 years onwards should use the single sex changing room of their gender.

Reasonable adjustments for children with SEND, or who require supervision when using changing facilities, are permitted and may include:

  • Allowing a child over the age of 8 to continue using the same changing room as their parent, guardian, or carer where supervision is required and the child is not yet able to use single-sex changing facilities independently.

  • Providing access to accessible/family changing facilities where available

  • Offering privacy screens or alternative arrangements where possible

This policy applies to all users of the facility where single-sex changing rooms are provided. This policy is subject to the Equality Act.

Please speak to the centre management team if you have any questions about our changing room guidance.
